Technology Assisted Treatment for Trichotillomania

What is the purpose of this study?

The purpose of this research study is to understand the extent to which a wrist-worn micro-motion device can detect symptoms of Trichotillomania.

What will I be asked to do as part of this study?

You will be asked to participate in up to three visits at Marquette University.

  • Visit 1: You will be asked to complete an interview and several questionnaires about yourself, your mental health, and your hair pulling. Also, you will be asked to wear a device on your wrist that will be used to track your motions.
  • Visit 2: This visit is expected to take place within one month of visit 1. During this visit you will be asked to complete several forms about your hair pulling similar to those completed in visit 1. Next you will be asked to wear the same wrist worn device from visit 1 and spend time alone in a research room engaging in activities you would usually do when at home alone.
  • Visit 3: Five randomly selected subjects who complete visit 2 will be asked to participate in visit 3. This visit is expected to take place approximately 3 months after visit 2. During this visit you will be asked to sit alone in a room while wearing two motion detection devices, one on each wrist. You will be asked to demonstrate each of your pulling behaviors 10 times.

Will I be compensated by participating in this study?

Yes, you will receive $25 for completing each visit 1 and visit 2 for a total of $50. You will receive $50 if you are chosen to complete visit 3.

Who can participate?

You may be able to participate if you are over the age of 18, speak fluent English, and have been diagnosed with trichotillomania.

Who do I contact if I am interested in getting additional information about this study?

Please call (414)288-5746 for more information. Upon calling, you will be asked to complete a 10-minute phone interview. This phone interview will help us determine whether you will be able to participate in the study.

You may also email jordan.stiede@marquette.edu or Christopher.c.bauer@marquette.edu with any questions about the study.
